The Pits!!

About nine months ago I stopped using deodorant. Not on purpose… at first. I began working from home when I ran out. I didn’t leave the house much and figured… who is going to smell my pits anyway?? I also figured now would be the best time to stop using commercial brand store bought deodorant because of all the chemicals in them. I researched some recipes for handmade deodorants online and through my own library of books. Anything that can be handmade, you best believe I will find it and make it. I found several recipes that I liked.. most of them used similar ingredients. After I mixed and matched to come up with my own creation, I gathered all of the things I needed and was off and running. My first batch was a powder deodorant and it was THEE absolute BOMB!! I loved it!! My second batch… well lets just say it was a little messier than the first. I tried to create a batch to go into my own deodorant container. It oozed out the bottom so I put it in the frig to make it solid and then I couldn’t get it out.O_o oops.

My handmade was better than any deodorant I could have bought if I do say so myself.. and I DO say so. =)  Now my deodorant is NOT antiperspirant. While I DO sweat… I do not have any odor. And its not like I am a sweating mess. The ingredients for this deodorant are designed to kill the bad odor causing bacteria. Oh and my fabulous handmade deodorant does not work on hairy pits. O_O Hair under the arms causes the build up of the sweat which in a closed environment is another cause of odor. Sweating in necessary for the body to rid itself of the toxins and wastes from the body. If you block your glands from producing sweat, which is what some if not most deodorants do, than those toxins and wastes are trapped in the body and can cause illness or contribute to the illnesses you may already have. If you are perspiring too much, then that could be a sign of illness as well.

A few chemicals to watch out for are that know to be dangerous to the body:

  1. “Aluminum chlorohydrate, aluminum zirconium tetrachlorohydrex gly or any aluminum compounds. Aluminum is absorbed through the skin and accumulates in the body. It has been suggested that there is an association between aluminum and Alzheimer’s disease”
  2. “Parabens (methyl, ethyl, propyl, benzyl and butyl) These are harmful in contact with the skin. There is some evidence that repeated exposure may cause reproductive harm.”
  3. “Triclosan  a skin irritant and may cause contact dermatitis”
  4. “Talc a carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer if it contains asbestos fibers”
  5. “Silica a skin irritant. It may be contaminated with crystalline quartz, which is a carcinogen.”

So there is the skinny on deodorant. I know some of you laughed at me or frown your face when I said I no longer use it and made my own.. But I am chemical free nine months strong. Well at least free of THOSE chemicals.

"My Lady Visit"

For someone like me, health insurance is a load of crap. Aside from the normal teeth cleaning twice a year and my annual “Lady Visit” once a year, I don’t go to the doctors. I am generally not sick like that to go. I am thinking where does all that money go? Shouldn’t I get at LEAST half of that money back?? Hello?!

So anyhoo, I went to my “Lady Visit” about a complaint I had. The doctor says to me and I quote “Oh that’s normal for people who are going through menopause.” MENOPAUSE?? O_o  Who’s in MENOPAUSE?? Clearly she was NOT talking to me!! I am WAY too young to be in menopause. She says well sometimes women can get this condition who are not in menopause and are as young as their early twenties. She gave me a prescription without any other explanation and sent me on my way. Hmmmmph I left there like WTF?? I was completely bewildered. She had written down the name of the condition on a separate prescription paper and the other paper had the prescription of a cream.

I went home and got online looking for answers. The condition she mentioned turned out to be an autoimmune disorder with NO CURE and not necessarily known to just menopausal women. According to the forums, the cream she prescribed does JACK for anyone. Now going from being completely bewildered to aggravated and almost irate my search intensified. Being the holistic practitioner that I am… I dug deeper into my studies of this condition as I was NOT happy with the very little information I was given. I researched from ALL possible angles.

As I dug deeper, my research lead me to my diet, lack of sleep and lack of water. That’s it? Wow.. ok, I can get a handle on that ASAP. I had been working what seemed like eighty hours a week in a city a half hour away but during the rush hour, turned out to be an hour drive each way. My diet was ok but because I was became a vegetarian, I had to make some adjustments. The water… well.. a shamed to say that I wasn’t drinking my share of the sixty-four ounces per day.

I got right to work. I put myself on a serious program. Water, water, water… oh and MORE water. O_o In addition, I deleted a few things from my life and diet and added some other things. I’ve incorporated my herbs, oils and spiritual practice that I had been lacking in the past. Rather than use the useless cream she prescribed me, being the creative herbalist that I am, I created my own cream. While I am not a hundred percent healed (notice I did not use the word cured) I am however on the road to it.

The moral of this blog is just because your doctor says it doesn’t make it so. Get a second and third opinion if you have to. Research for yourself what your options are. You will find that there are many. If you are reading this, than chances are you are interested in alternative methods of healing. Remember if you are using only one method to heal, than you are not healing holistically or maximizing all that you can to achieve a balanced and harmonic mind, body and spirit.

Visions on a board

In 2006 I went to a holistic workshop @ Borders. The workshop was on “Becoming a Six Figured Person.’ The speaker broke out her vision board and talked about what was on it and all the things that manifested from the board. OH I was INTRIGUED!! My thin little eyebrows raised up and I took notice. I was excited. I couldn’t WAIT for this woman to stop talking to so I can go home and create mine. I left there and ran a few folks over trying to get to Wally World (uh that would be Walmart for those of you who don’t know) to purchase me a board. I searched high and low for magazines and even hit up a few neighbors and co-workers for theirs.

So I began cutting and pasting and positioning the pictures and words that I had cut out. Everything in life I could think of that I wanted, I pasted on there. THERE. It is done. I put my board up in my home office… and forgot about it. Not really but the board was pinned up behind my desk chair and the only time I would see it was when I went into that room or when I was sitting at the table to eat as the my home office and dinning room served two purposes.

Somehow I don’t ENVISION a VISION board to manifest anything if its not in your VISION. O_o

In 2010 I found a really good book on vision boards called well duh “The Vision Board” by Joyce Schwarz. My vision board had things that I imagined that I wanted. I have words of encouragement and pictures of places and all kinds of things on there. There is no wrong or right way to create a vision board however this book does give examples of boards that were created, activities to help get your juices flowing and tips that might be useful. Each board is unique and personal to the person who created it.

One of the things I did not do with the first board that I do with my most recently created board to the visualization process. You have to spend time visualizing what it is that you want and the things that are on your board for them to manifest. Its not enough to just see the board every now and again, it takes more than that. What is also helpful is setting time lines for when you want these things to manifest. For example; I would like to get my passport. By the end of the year, I will have purchased my passport. There. That is a time line. I also have pictures of passports on my vision board. Now I can see, and I can visualize me standing in that long stupid line at the post office waiting to get my passport application processed and picture taken.

I have a new home office and my board still sits behind my desk. It expands from wall to wall as it is broken into three sections. I make sure that I spend time in the manifesting process of this vision board. As I have witnessed many of those desires manifest right off that board, I am well on my way to checking off each one of them.

My love of plants

I’ve never been fond of plants. My thumb ain’t that green. My love of plants began almost sixteen years ago by accident. I was diagnosed with depression and refuse to go on Prozac the therapist was trying so desperately to put me on. My interest in plants and herbs came through Spirit as I was lead to study them and their effects on the mind. Good ole Spirit. I love her. LOL I started studying the properties of plants and herbs. Like how to change my mood from negative to positive so this woman wouldn’t put on me on meds that made me loopy.

I studied for years with excellent results but felt something was missing. I met a guy at work who said he studied plants and herbs as well. I was like OMG.. will you marry me? He said he studied them for medicinal purposes. MEDICINAL huh?? Like weed for my cataract? LOL O_o Not that I am familiar with such but one does hear rumors. After he stopped laughing he explained that plants and herbs can assist the body in healing. Oh MY… tell me more!! I was intrigued. I asked him did he know about the spiritual properties of the plants and herbs that he studied and he said no. My eyebrow raised and I proposed (not that proposal) that he and I worked together. He and I didn’t get that chance but our chance encounter paved the way for my future.

I found several schools and programs that offered herbal studies. I took everything I could afford and get my hands on. I became a Master Herbalist. Herbalism became my life. What once was filled with Midol, Dimetapp, and Benedryl, my medicine cabinet was now stocked with Lavender, Eucalyptus and Tea Tree oil to name a few. As a master herbalist, I am able to combine several herbs and plants together using a variety of methods to create the most powerful remedies  that you can imagine.

So the next time you pass by some herbs, show some respect to the herb and plant world. You never know… that herb or plant may be used to heal something that ails you.  As always, stop by my website at http://www.nu-bodi.com.

The WHOLE in Holistic

The word “Holistic” is on just about everything now a days. Kind of like the word “Organic.” What that means to the manufacturers and the consumers should be the same but is something entirely different. Like what is organic dog food? The dog eats out of the toilet and licks his butt. The packaging clearly states ORGANIC yet the ingredients say PORTIONS of beef, pork and chicken.

Holistic means, and I quote…. “incorporating the concept of holism in theory or practice.” For a product or service to be truly considered holistic, it should first address the mind. Can it assist the mind in healing or reaching new heights or does it help emotionally and mentally? Next it should address the body. Is it beneficial to the body? And last but not least… how does it effect the Spirit?

I have been in the holistic health and wellness field for almost sixteen years and have yet to see many people and products actually use this concept. As a holistic health practitioner, I provide services that address the needs of a person mentally, emotionally, spiritually and physically.

What is organic? When purchasing anything that claims to be organic, the product must have characteristics of or pertain to living organisms. My products are truly organic in nature. As a master herbalist, I use fresh plants and herbs, micas not dyes and make them in small batches to ensure freshness. Just because a product says its made with Lavender… does not mean that the lavender came from the actual plant. Know where your products came from and how it was made to ensure that you are not being fooled by the terms being thrown around.

Due to Hurricane Irene, I am forced to cut this blog short but feel free to visit me on the web at http://www.nu-bodi.com. See you tomorrow!!

Modern Technology

Wouldn’t life be grand if EVERYTHING was at our finger tips? Well most of it is… HOWEVER, I just spent many minutes trying to send my blog from my phone. We are expecting a hurricane to come through and I did not want to miss my deadline of having sent my blog through. While through the years we have done leaps and bounds with creating technology to make life easier… what it really has done was made us even lazier than we were before the technology was created. We used to have to get up and change the channel on the tv. Now there is a remote for the remote!! If that doesn’t give a new meaning to the phrase “Couch Potato”.. I don’t know what does. People use to take long walks and jogs around the park. Now we have stationary bikes. While that IS exercise, it takes away from the Stop and Smell the Roses type of day.

Its going on three years that I have not used the microwave. So my daughter says “how will we heat up the food?” O_o  <thats my blank stare stupid look that I gave her.> I said “well, you put the food on a small plate and put it in the toaster oven.” New concept to her. Toaster Oven. Microwaves are food killers. They send electromagnetic waves through  your food, thus killing it. If your food came from a can, its already dead, and the microwave killed it even further. I mean really though.. how much more can  you kill food? Lots more. So let’s take this scenario that I have told my students: The farmer sprays his crops with pesticides, herbicides and insecticides. The cow, happily grazing in the field, eats the grass sprayed with all the chemicals. Now the cow not only has THOSE chemicals in her, she also has some hormones in her too because she was a little under weight. Now you take the cow home, which is now known as beef and you cook it. The leftovers are wrapped up and put in the frig for safe keeping. The next day for lunch, you want some of that beef and decide to nuke it in the microwave. Hmmmm now how many times did you just kill that cow? All in all from the beef you just ate, you have in YOU the pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, the hormones AND electromagnetic waves. Bon apetite!!

Scientific studies have shown that microwaves change the molecular structure of food and drinks… so why are you still using your microwave? Just something to think about.

Silence of the Mind

My spirit has been saying to me that I need to meditate. I’ve known this for some time now but have been avoiding it like the plague. The thought of sitting down, quieting my mind from all the chit chatter that goes on in there, just does not appeal to me. I have rather grown fond of the chatter if you ask me. I thought we had a good relationship. Obviously my spirit did not agree.

The other night I was on the phone with my friend and HER spirit came through and said “LaTreviette… you need to meditate two hours a day.” TWO HOURS?? Are you nuts?? I can’t sit still for ten minutes let alone two hours. I had to think on this one. I’ve mediated before so it wasn’t anything new to me. I was doing quite well and regularly until I fell off my rhythm.

I would probably have ignored the spirit that was coming through my friend as I have done so well in the past but this spirit was assertive and I was double teamed by own spirit. As the double teaming continued, I was told that great gifts and abilities would open up to me and I would experience spiritual growth. HA… don’t try and bribe me was my thought.

As instructed, I began my meditation the following morning. I started with twenty minutes in the morning and twenty minutes at night. That was the best I could do for the time being. I found some guided meditations that I had on my ipod from a while back. Guided huh… now how am I supposed to quiet MY mind.. if she is doing all this talking?? Doesn’t seem fair. Not fond of the guided meditation. Shhhh lady I am trying to get in my ZEN Zone.

There are many benefits to meditation despite my and others resistance to it. Here are a few of the benefits:

  • Reduce stress levels, help you relax
  • Increase emotional stability
  • Helps you discover your purpose
  • Develops will power
  • Brings body, mind, spirit in harmony
  • Helps keep things in perspective

So after some time, I was finally in my Zen Zone. I received information on a skill I have wanted to develop for quite some time. It was through meditation that I was able to see what the future will look like once I hone in on this skill. The insights I received, I could not have gotten anywhere else. I am glad that I FINALLY listened to my spirit(s) and started meditating. I am hooked. My creative juices are flowing again and I feel more alive than I have in a long time. I hope that my little story has inspired you to meditate. If not two hours a day, perhaps 10-15 minutes a day.

Thank you for joining me today. I hope to see you tomorrow. As always, feel free to leave comments and feedback. Visit me on the web at http://www.nu-bodi.com =)

So it begins…

What is all the blogging about?? I’ve heard about blogging, never thought I could get into it but here I am. I have read a few blogs and generally the ones that I had read were about nothing. I said to myself… SELF… you can write about nothing. You have YEARS worth of nothing to write about. At the least you can do is write about the years of experience you have with health and wellness and the holistic industry. So here I am. I would like to model this after Julie & Julia or Julia & Julie (however it goes) where she blogged for 365 days. Hopefully at the end of it all, I will have something resembling a book.

Please feel free to leave comments and feedback. Thanks and see you tomorrow. =)
